People making that argument are making the same error the CDC and more broadly the entire credentialed establishment is making: they believe that they can use trust to create false beliefs without the result being that they burn trust to the exact degree that they succeed.

So once again LW advocates for being more wrong because it satisfies their intellectual self-pleasuring. Just make the whole site one big tribute to Plato's noble lie combined with patting themselves on the back for being so brilliant. And some, I assume, are good people.

I mean, we all know that leftism is right even when it's wrong, don't we?

I don't think this is a particularly left/right partisan issue. Well, there is one exception which is the inaccurate comments about risks from Asians which is a left-wing delusion, but that's pretty minor. The biggest issue is that the US government didn't manage to make tests.

Lots of angles on this: The left decided that ideological purity was the most important qualification for ... everything - the result is that our public health professionals write OpEds about quarantines "not working" because they all deeply believe "borders bad" 1/x

Yeah, THAT is an ideological bias that has caused serious harm to the response. Evidence for how wrong it is is that even the Chinese, who actually had the initial outbreak of the disease, are banning travel into China from third countries!

And also everyone else is now talking about and implementing local travel bans in e.g. Italy.

The left isn't agreement capable - if the Pinkers of the world back down off the ledge and stop the "viruses don't care about borders" line the followers won't follow - he's barely keeping himself ahead of his mob. People on the left will violate travel bans out of spite.

Trust is so broken down that people on the right rightly see government as hating them and won't follow sensible restrictions because they don't trust the motives of a USG that *hates* them.

There's an element of that in the US, but right now I think there are bigger effects that cut across ideology. Trump & co are dragging their feet. Even Elon Musk is countersignalling and saying that it's a "stupid panic".

The things Trump is empowered to do - like the China travel ban - he did. Other things would require him to give orders to USG that they don't want to carry out which would then be ignored - which is extremely dangerous to him specifically.
