The case against travel bans found in outlets like Vox and Guardian is that a partial travel restriction doesn't work, which is correct. However, a *full* ban on travel into and out of countries would be easy to impose. Ground all aircraft, physically block train lines, roads.
The obvious counters to such "full" ban ideas are that (a) they would be very disruptive (b) they might still be somewhat porus over a long enough timescale
(a) is misleading. Why? Because the alternative that people are proposing and that they are using in China is travel bans on a building-by-building scale. The smaller the scale of your travel ban, the more disruption it causes.
The "problem" as far as Vox / Guardian / NY Times is concerned with this line of reasoning is that it's not confined to fighting pandemics They're committed to removing borders on nations and then fail to notice the reaction which is to recreate those borders around *everything*
What is a gated community other than a mini-border within a state? What is their bubble other than a series of mini-borders?
