I tried to deny it for fear of becoming a hipster, but I cannot dissuade myself any longer from the conviction that the first Mad Max film is the best.

Fury Road WOULD'VE been the best MM movie if it didn't stupidly have Nux sacrifice himself in battle for the heroes, which undermined the entire feminist thesis of the film and thereby conceded that Joe was right the whole time. (which I'd be fine with if it was on purpose

I could ignore it after the reveal that the vulva cult (or whatever its called) was a failed attempt at re-establishing civilization, but the Nux thing made it unavoidably obvious that this movie has no idea wtf its doing.

I'm not so sure. Nux was besotted; Joe was deliberate but mistaken - the movie didn't have a happy ending. You can't rebuild society without giving your war boys brides or they'll turn on you isn't a bad lesson.

The whole movie was about the beta uprising all along.

Alpha / beta doesn't fit perfectly here. The war boys were subordinate but they were alpha - brave, reckless, brimming with vitality. Men have to cooperate and hierarchy has to exist and a war band needs a leader but he's a bad leader if he doesn't get brides for his boys
