I tried to deny it for fear of becoming a hipster, but I cannot dissuade myself any longer from the conviction that the first Mad Max film is the best.

By that lens Joe actually is the literal (tragic) hero - well-intentioned, undone by hubris and lust. He thought his powerful cult of personality would keep his war boys in line forever but when he needed them he couldn't rely on them because he left their needs unmet.

Aren't they sterile from radiation, though? I think I remember that. (not that it matters in a movie where the top general of a guy who literally treats women like livestock is a woman lol)

The whole movie was about the beta uprising all along.

Alpha / beta doesn't fit perfectly here. The war boys were subordinate but they were alpha - brave, reckless, brimming with vitality. Men have to cooperate and hierarchy has to exist and a war band needs a leader but he's a bad leader if he doesn't get brides for his boys
