My interpretation of the evidence is that we have had bands of people but when humans moved onto a giant open plain with no natural predators and a lack of a disease filter there was a massive change in the selective pressure.

Their sons are under the same threat and are in a competition to cooperate more effectively but every generation they're competing over women who have no selective filter except "has to accept the situation". Probably started much longer ago than 10k years but really accelerated
