The funny thing is that Dawkins' comment about eugenics is a deviation from the views ascribed to him in the essay. The lashing out he's getting is for him not being enough of a true believer.

The lashing out he's getting comes from him being part of their clique / tribe / whatever so he's in their power and they want to police him. What's the reaction if Greg Cochran said the same thing?
