The very first sentence of this NYT book review is invoking a non-consensus mythology of the importance of slavery. Slave economies did not distinguish themselves in material prosperity, and the institution likely harmed free white labor.pic.twitter.com/NQSwl8ckhw

The easy rebuttal to that is that the Union won the Civil War due to massively greater wealth. If the slave economy was the source of prosperity how did that happen?

The best defense against brainwashing is to do your own laundry - read widely and discuss important subjects with both people you agree with, as well as those who you do not agree with.

The argument is something along the lines that the early industrialists in the North ended up extracting all the value added in the cotton fields. Plausible, but if true indicts literally everyone as benefiting from slavery and you have to wave your hands about the post-CW era.

On a per capita basis, antebellum South was wealthier than the North and had eight years longer average life expectancy. That changed when the largest USA asset, the market value of slaves vanished.
