@PsychRabble @PamelaParesky holy cow... Likely not getting a job because of tweets.https://twitter.com/SwipeWright/status/1217130314595782657 …

Spoke with a colleague yesterday at a nearby university I'm applying to as an instructor. Colleague brought up my name casually. Nearby graduate students & a faculty member called me a "major asshole" for my tweets. Colleague defended me, told them I was quite progressive...

No indication the students or faculty member know I am applying for an instructor position. And they may not be involved in any step of the hiring process. Since it's not a tenure-track job, it's not a hiring process all the faculty participate in.

So while I won't say it's likely their negative opinions of me will factor in to any hiring decisions, it certainly can't possibly help.

I have this suspicion it could interfere, but I could be wrong. Hope I am.

That's the most annoying part. It's impossible for me to know how many (if any) jobs I am not getting interviews for because of my Twitter. It's a lot easier to simply not hire someone based on their views than it is to fire them.

I applaud your courage, though. I hope that this generation of academics will overturn the “timid until tenure” paradigm.

Thanks! And I like the phrase "timid until tenure." That definitely captures it pretty well. Although I've spoken to several tenured faculty that are also very afraid about speaking their minds. The window of timidity seems to move with you like a shadow.

First it's "wait until you get into graduate school." Then it's "wait until you graduate and get a postdoc", followed by "wait until you land a tenure-track job" and then "wait until you get tenure." But tenured faculty still don't feel safe.

That's why I refused to play the game. The best time to speak out is now. My ability to speak freely on any topic I choose is non-negotiable.

Tweet anonymously. Your colleagues won't accept or acknowledge arguments from your account but rather than making intelligent and influential people less accepting of your arguments that has the effect of reducing the level of respect intelligent people have for academia.
