"I do makeup for me, as expression, not for anyone else" is the biggest load of crock I've ever heard. Isn't it a little weird that everyone who does makeup 'for themselves' always aims for the same goal - making eyes look bigger, skin more youthful, lips fuller?

You know all those things that it seems like I do to optimize my signalling? I don't really do them for signalling! I just do them for myself because the activities and goals I personally like just happen to line up with what's best for signalling, down to the smallest detail!

This is a barrier of understanding that men have with women - women typically don't have nearly the introspection as to their own motives that men do because it's a big advantage for women to not understand things about themselves. Men are drawn to ingenues and to make up.

Where does the asymmetry come from? Don't men also benefit from self-deception, always assuming you are good etc?

The asymmetry comes from lots of factors but boils down to: Men deal with nature and cooperating with other men - truth needed Women deal with pleasing men and possibly deceiving them if needed - self-deception useful and necessary Total Y-chromosome replacement events - common

> Men deal with nature and cooperating with other men - truth needed ok, that makes sense. Hunting, etc.

Total Y-chromosome replacement events mean that (Eurasian) men are mainly selected to form effective war bands - hunting is in the ancient past (but is more current for women - who were less heavily selected since the h&g period).
