Drop a wallet in Japan and even if it's found by the *least* honest and conscientious person it'll be returned intact because that person expects everyone else would do so and that he'd be judged if he didn't. Do the same in a low trust society and the reverse applies. 2/2

A few responses: 1) India is unique on Earth in that the whole country is structured around endogamous mating groups so there's varying levels of trust within those groups but almost none overall 2) India is a bit more populous than Iceland - Iceland is under the pop threshold.

As technology improves everything will become a technical task. The night will be patrolled by police drones that will deter muggers. However I do think that the left part can make the task difficult for that right tail, perhaps to the point where it does become impossible.

If the right tail was really in charge and had a long-termist perspective they would use eugenics/gene editing to lift everyone up since that's a +sum game. The fact that eugenics is taboo in our society is a strong indication that we're in a lot of trouble.

We're in a lot of trouble because we have an insane state religion - one shaped around the needs of the priesthood of that religion to remain in power - mostly by destructive means (importing low IQ voters, driving productive people out of cities, sexually liberating women).

More specifically they don't have a long-termist perspective because they don't formally own the place and so have to destroy it to keep control. Tragedy of the commons in governance.
