The lower graph is more in line with how societies operate. Skewing the distribution on some trait means the expectation when dealing with a stranger is skewed and for a society to function beyond the smallest of scales strangers have to interact. 1/2

Drop a wallet in Japan and even if it's found by the *least* honest and conscientious person it'll be returned intact because that person expects everyone else would do so and that he'd be judged if he didn't. Do the same in a low trust society and the reverse applies. 2/2

A few responses: 1) India is unique on Earth in that the whole country is structured around endogamous mating groups so there's varying levels of trust within those groups but almost none overall 2) India is a bit more populous than Iceland - Iceland is under the pop threshold.

I think that over time the right tail will increasingly leverage technology to have a lot of control, and will provide solutions to such issues or at the very least push them to the margins.
