This goes together perfectly with the fact that USG didn't invade Afghanistan or Iraq for any specific reason. It happened. Various actors within USG had reasons for pushing it to happen but no one has command of the machine. 1/ https://twitter.com/Aelkus/status/1208980843139682311 …

Since no one has command of the machine no one can say why we're there *because there's no actual reason we're there* other than the balance of forces pushed the machine to take that action and there's no vector summation of forces that push the machine to take us out 2/

No victory conditions are declared and none can be met because setting those conditions requires pushing the machine to accept it and no one has done that or can do it. 3/

No one believes but no one can stop it because no one has any idea why it goes on other than because lots of people have missions to do things related to it - which also entail defending those missions from those who argue that they're not necessary. 4/

If you think the scandal of the Afghanistan Papers is that officials didn't think USG could "win" you have to ask what those same people even thought of as victory. No one has any idea. 5/5
