The Mets could probably extend McNeil right now. He’ll be much older than average when he hits FA. He’s never made money in the game. He’s got a checkered injury history. He’d probably sign on for a guarantee at a big discount.
In most orgs the players are the ones in the position of wanting to trade off long term money to reduce risk. Mets are unusual - they prefer to sign short contracts at a discount in exchange for increased injury risk rather than discounted long contracts on better players.
