"Unexceptional upper-middle-class" in NYC only seems low because its close in proximity to globe spanning wealth. Living in a pre-war apartment on the UWS *as a child* implies a large degree of wealth or at least income.

My parents had an income, in that my father worked for the city. But the apartment I grew up in cost about $275k in todays dollars; they bought it in 1972, when the city was losing population.
