From a Pascal's Wager type perspective, I see rational value in religion. But personally, I have a hard time reconciling a God great enough to create the universe with one petty enough to demand to be worshipped or who cares about anyone's sex life.

The universe does care about your sex life because it's crucial to you fulfilling your purpose as a living being. The consequence of a long chain of rules that go back to fundamental physics are that certain types of conduct will make you as miserable as is possible.

Understood properly that sounds a lot like a God that cares about your sex life to me.

It is /quite/ a stretch to claim that fundamental physics dictates the sexual norms that optimize human wellbeing.

Biology is a consequence of chemistry is a consequence of physics.

Yeah, I get the point you're trying to make; it's rather facile. Even biology alone doesn't account for the massive differences in optimal strategies even in the modern world, much less over time. Humans are not as simple as the motion of planets.

No, and yet the religious rules that have survived are superior ways to conduct your sex life when measured by human flourishing when compared to the modern sexual mores which result in extinction of the genetic lines of those intelligent enough to follow them.

Which fits with the Pascal's Wager style perspective that I started with: I don't argue against a general effectiveness of religious traditions which are often casually dismissed. But I find your argument they're innate consequences of the universe unpersuasive.

How can they be understood as anything other than consequences of the nature of the universe? Game theory is timeless and exists for all possible beings Sexually spread infections are a consequence of the nature of life

          > Even biology alone doesn't account for the massive differences in optimal strategies even in the modern world, much less over time. More than one optimum argues against universal optimum. This conversation is truly absurdly reductionist; I'm done.
