Caplan deserves to be debated respectfully, since unlike many open borders activists, he never uses ad hominem attacks against the people he disagrees with. Perhaps not coincidentally, he is one of the smartest open borders activists, so restrictionists ought to reciprocate.

Nah, Caplan went berserk with rage against me and some old 1981 finance professor of mine when he stumbled upon an old anecdote of mine that completely stumped his moral case for Open Borders:http://www.unz.com/isteve/bryan-caplan-explains-why-citizenists/ …

I just read Caplan's post and yours and, while I think his argument is very bad, I didn't think it was disrespectful at all. I know that I have a rather high tolerance for conflict but still I really don't see it!

Having met
@bryan_caplan , the image of him going berserk with rage is sort of amusing in its implausability. Perhaps Steve was jokingly exaggerating to entice us to read the piece.1 reply 0 retweets 8 likes -
I genuinely don't understand why so many people seem to agree this was an example of disrespectful behavior. Is it because of the "monster" part? I just read that as a (bad) philosophical argument.

Caplan spit out the term "monster" because he was enraged by knowing he'd lost a major argument. He'd never yet thought about about how giving out cheap visas was like the fiduciary violation of selling stock too cheap, but now he had and was stumped. So he sputtered "monster."

I'm convinced he genuinely thinks that refusing a visa to a foreigner when someone in the US want to employ him is a violation of a fundamental right that represents a major moral failing. I think it's ridiculous but I didn't interpret that as a personal attack on you at all.

He's had the flaws in that line of argument explained to him over and over and simply ignores it - it's not responding with personal attack but it sure isn't honest debate.
