If academics don’t have the courage to say no to the spread of wokism, academia will be a empty shell of its former self, a place in which progressive pieties and ideology more broadly triumph over truth. It might already be too late.

I would point at a slightly different mechanism. Ideology scales, personal concerns don't. So a system where individuals have some leeway for corrupt decision-making & can expel existing members and let new ones in is absolutely ripe for ideological takeover.

In a large scale battle between a bunch of mostly fair individuals who select on merit, and a cult that mostly ignores merit and promotes other cult members, the cult wins. This has happened to (parts of) academia, and perhaps the corporate and media worlds as well.
