So Occam's Razor points to culture alone. But I grant that brain adaptation *could* have happened. I just don't see clear evidence of brain differences between populations.

Brain volume is not equal between populations, and that's correlated with IQ.

Is the word "caliper" a magical talisman in your mind that dismisses the plain and obvious argument? It's just a measuring tool and the findings of calipers are confirmed by every other measuring tool. This is like denying multiplication because it can be done on an abacus.

And they're ( elephants and toothed whales) smarter than most animals. But their neurons are different, brain organization is different. I'm smarter than the average elephants and it's entirely possible that you are too.

In humans, there's a correlation between measured intelligence and brain size, and it looks to be causal. Which makes sense - if a smaller brain worked just as well, selection would have favored smaller brains - birth would be easier.

What he's asserting is that SSAs are more intelligent per brain volume - which implies that there are adaptations for more efficient brains with selective pressure against larger brains. Theoretically, hybrids should be super smart if they get SSA brain org with larger volume.

look, human brains are exactly the same in how they work and how big they are, and to the degree that this isn't true the differences in total mass, number of neurons, and white matter vs grey matter all neatly cancel out.

It's also pretty cool how the different human species have had introgressions from different archaic hominids and yet somehow these all averaged out to leave groups different enough to be easily differentiated by visual inspection yet mentally identical

The advantageous adaptations from archaic introgression would spread; the bad stuff wouldn't. Archaeology suggests brains weren't a relative strength of archaic hominins.

I think differences in appearance have causes more recent than ancient introgression: https://www.gnxp.com/WordPress/2015/06/14/allowing-the-dead-to-speak/ …
