If we had been painstakingly just, we would have executed many more Germans as war criminals. Many more. True for Japan as well. There were practical reasons for _minimizing_ past atrocities.

Not so: the western Allies were pretty decent, on the whole. There's a subtle difference between throwing candy bars at kids and burning the village to the ground. Now the Soviets were a different story.

Depends on your definition of horrible. A few generations were worse off under the USSR but better off today because American government is more thoroughly, long term destructive and the Soviets more just looted the place. No beloved-by-USG 3rd worlders living in Poland.
