I agree with a small piece of it but also think this thread fails to acknowledge a major elephant in the room: the second amendment and precedent recognizing the individual right is already there; therefore the debate is not whether it is but whether to remove it. 1/2https://twitter.com/willwilkinson/status/1174360008080941056 …

In my latest at @nytopinion, I argue that the truculent response to @BetoORourke's mandatory assault weapon buyback proposal betrays a disturbing hostility to democracy on the right. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/18/opinion/assault-rifle-ban.html …

Thus, the burden is not upon those who think it should be an individual right but upon those who believe it should be removed, and they must pass the established high bar of an amendment to change. However, I tend to agree that the "warnings" about violence are not helpful. 2/2

The warnings about violence are useful. Rights are Schelling Points - cross a line and someone can go berserk. This is vulnerable to a salami slice attack by aiming for "reasonable" violations and doing it over and over. Drawing a bright line stops that.

Bullshit to the idea that threats of violence are useful in any political discussion ever. It's self-righteous chest thumping and idiotic machismo. They are the mirror image of the agitators on the other side talking about gun confiscation. Both types deserve each other.

This is just like the "Proud Boys" and "Antifa". Both types of violence legitimize the other and the ones who are hurt are everyone else who doesn't want the streets filled with mob violence. Extremes create their mirror by being beyond reasonable positions.

There's a fundamental asymmetry there because Antifa is state funded and protected. Proud Boys are guys who want a street fight with the type of hectoring scolds that they're sick of in their daily lives. Antifa creates Proud Boys only by serving as a target for that frustration

I don't care how you characterize or differentiate either. The violence of one side draws people into violence on the other side. Neither one will stop violence; both will contribute to increasing violence. Anyone who doesn't want violence must oppose both.
