Not my usual take on anything but people who live on continents that don't have megafauna because your ancestors or previous inhabitants wiped them out should tone down the moralizing about hunting animals that can wipe out the food supply of whole villages.

Westerners (usually - don't know much poaching of this type there is) hunt with local permission in Africa which provides funds for preservation Poaching is done by locals b/c of the value of ivory to foreigners Reducing trophy hunting tips the balance to the latter

Well am not saying it should be outlawed. Am just saying that I think the westerners who want to kill these animals are fucked in the head.

And you know these westerners don’t give a shit about the local communities—that’s not why they’re doing it.

So this is a "I just don't want to know it happens" thing? Because someone is going to be killing elephants. There's a reason megafauna are extinct on every other continent - they're great to see in videos or in zoos but not so great to have to live near.

It’s a commercial industry that caters to fat, rich westerners. Am not entirely convinced it would continue the same way without them.

It almost certainly wouldn't continue. Leaving elephants living on land that produces nothing. The elephants themselves would only have value as a source of ivory. Pretty easy to predict what happens from there.
