Seems to be inversely proportional to accomplishment. Deep seeded insecurity which probably drove them to get the credential in the first place. My dad had a PhD in quantum chemistry, over a dozen patents and would cringe when someone called him "doctor".

Everyone, not just women. There are no exceptions to the rule: PhDs referring to themselves as "Dr" in any context are always total jokes.

Does it improve understanding to point out that a flaws that women are particularly prone to (vanity + credentialism) are also shared by men sometimes - especially when the case in point is a woman displaying those traits to an extreme degree? No, it obscures understanding.
