No prisons is a perfectly reasonable position. All crimes should be dealt with by one of the following: Lashes Hanging Restitution

You don't lash someone three times - you move on to one of the other punishments on the list that does have (permanent) incapacitative effects

Restitution doesn't have incapacitative effects, so that just leaves hanging. And our current legal system is chock full of obstacles against that.

Obviously our current legal system needs replacement - it's the result of a war between people who are ideologically committed to favoring policies that maximize crime and people who try to mitigate the harm of that by creating work-arounds (@Steve_Sailer 's ex of the drug war)

You're describing a policy tug-of-war, which is unlikely to get resolved one way or another. Both Mark Kleiman and Robin Hanson provide examples of attempts to tug the rope sideways: http://www.overcomingbias.com/2019/03/tug-sideways.html …

^ makes false assumptions about left "Pulling sideways" is instantly recognized and attacked or co opted b/c the left's goals aren't their stated goals. In this ex they act to maximize crime - anything that interferes w that is opposed There's no solution in the current system

I'm willing to believe in homo hypocritus: real goals aren't stated goals. But real goals are rarely the INVERSE of stated goals. They don't act to "maximize" crime. Liberal municipalities could have MUCH higher crime rates under different policies.

Modeling the left as if they favored maximizing crime but are under constraints that prevent the fulfillment of this goal (at minimum, people move entirely out of places they rule) does have predictive power In contrast what you're "willing to believe" doesn't

      Replying to @CovfefeAnon @gcochran99 and

The "constraints" are providing most of the predictive power there, because actual crime rates are so far from the maximum possible.

Are they? The constraints are mainly people moving out of maximal crime areas - the murder rate of Baltimore is higher that of any country bar Honduras (~51 per 100k in B-more 57 per 100k in Honduras). Seems like the theoretical max to me. That's a rate that gets people to flee

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_by_murder_rate … The top U.S city has less than half of Tijuana's, and someone trying to maximize Tijuana's could increase that. NYC is liberal but also has a huge number of cops who've driven crime down.

The most liberal cities tend to have housing policies which act to prevent people from moving in and encouraging the poor to leave, which results in gentrification and lowered crime rates.
