/ Second, there were, I believe, two sentences about skulls in a very thorough review. The article, then, was not at all "about" the use of skulls for racial classification. Nevertheless, the claim was entirely accurate. Here is a blog by John Hawks: http://johnhawks.net/explainer/laboratory/race-cranium.html …pic.twitter.com/hLmFxQjgUb

/ Here is an article, which we cited, by Ousley, which finds that researchers can classify skulls to "social race" reasonably well. https://s3.amazonaws.com/academia.edu.documents/50930646/ajpa.2100620161216-7298-1s55y5d.pdf?response-content-disposition=inline%3B%20filename%3DUnderstanding_race_and_human_variation_W.pdf&X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Credential=AKIAIWOWYYGZ2Y53UL3A%2F20190809%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20190809T234606Z&X-Amz-Expires=3600&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&X-Amz-Signature=ffbae32d9ade286dd847878dc885d9e4987f1251756de054d13a0cb0bf2ff142 …

/ Now, to be clear, Ousley is skeptical of the traditional concept of race, but that doesn't change his results. I'm happy to admit that my theory of race is different from his. But that's an entirely different conversation.pic.twitter.com/DqPJAyz8hV

/ Here's another article, from 1989, that reports the same uncontroversial finding: Researchers can classify skulls into race (and gender). https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/037907388990234X …pic.twitter.com/J5epUCEKzs

/ Here's a reasonably fair account from that IDW champion, Slate, in which the author even talks about calipers!! https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2011/01/can-you-tell-a-person-s-race-from-his-or-her-skull.html …pic.twitter.com/Ww2YMyvxlZ

/ Here, to end, is another article from 1995. Notice the accuracy (70-90%).pic.twitter.com/4zId0xzQnQ

/ I understand. You don't like Quillette. And that's perfectly reasonable. You can dislike them. But I think your article ends perfectly. We are indeed stuck behind the spectacles of our tribal preferences.pic.twitter.com/uBhGhfXkro

/ But, it would be nice to note, 1, that the article wasn't "about" classifying skulls (again, that was two sentences). And 2, that researchers can, in fact, uncontroversially classify skulls to ancestral groups (races).

/ Also, because you are a champion of recognizing confirmation bias, you should fight back against the wild and mendacious claims that Quillette promotes phrenology. If you read the review you linked, you will see that there is nothing remotely resembling such a promotion.

/ Tribalism is a powerful and often pernicious force. The best we can do is accept our errors and forgive others for theirs. I don't mind honest mistakes. But I do mind blatant dishonesty. I believe that yours was an honest mistake. But, it also seems like a rhetorical stunt.
