chinese proverb: "Each person should sweep the snow from his own doorsteps and should not fret about the frost on his neighbor's roof." fei xiaotong, pretty much the founder of sociology/anthropology in china, said this proverb illustrates how chinese society is particularistic.

That proverb sounds a lot like "Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. "

It's interesting that though they're very superficially similar one is "this is good advice for your own benefit" and the other is an admonition
