Modern writers have a really nasty habit of telling incomplete stories. For example, Harry Potter never even approaches the skill necessary to create a Hogwarts or a Sword of Griffindor. It's not even explained how the twins create their candies.

The one example of that that always stuck out and bothered me was that his father and his two buddies created the Marauder's Map when they were at Hogwarts and his group never remotely approached that level of artistry

"A wizard did it." "...isn't Harry supposed to be a wizard? Hogwarts school of what?" "Apparently, no, not a school of wizardry."

Other examples were at least "well, those were adults" or "that was the distant past" but that example was striking - his dad and his buddies and it was only like 14 years before the story started

They also learned to transform into animals. On their own, the way that's supposed to be hard. The current crop of students are apparently all dunces except the twins.

On some level she's aware of her limitations as a strategic thinker and how this could take readers out of the story - "why don't they just use x?". As a result she limits the magic available to the protagonists. Polyjuice potion is their best feat - can't be used spontaneously
