Modern writers have a really nasty habit of telling incomplete stories. For example, Harry Potter never even approaches the skill necessary to create a Hogwarts or a Sword of Griffindor. It's not even explained how the twins create their candies.

Other examples were at least "well, those were adults" or "that was the distant past" but that example was striking - his dad and his buddies and it was only like 14 years before the story started
