Evolutionary psychologists still seem to be largely on board with the nonsensical 'Semen Displacement Hypothesis', though primatologist Alan Dixson gave a pretty thorough takedown of it over a decade ago https://traditionsofconflict.com/blog/2018/6/7/the-human-penis-is-remarkably-boring …https://twitter.com/PsychoSchmitt/status/1117619288498737152 …

This is the foundational paper on the 'Semen Displacement Hypothesis'. They played with sex toys n corn starch to simulate semen displacement, n then they asked American students about thrusting depth following allegations of female infidelity.pic.twitter.com/GH2xxdgggX

There's no actual evidence for the 'semen displacement hypothesis', and all the evidence is against sperm competition playing an important role in recent human evolutionary history, as indicated by the comparative morphological evidence, ethnographic and nonpaternity data.pic.twitter.com/OY8JsjHQYm

I agree that sperm competition is not a prominent feature in humans but non paternity rates must be viewed through a lens of extremely strong social sanctions and punishment against adultery until pretty recently. Cheating in married couples is not that uncommon today.

Could these restrictions on infidelity be a product of control over women rather than a mechanism for avoiding parental uncertainty?

Very unlikely since control of female sexuality is more relaxed in cultures where men do not invest in their children. Look at the study above. Around 15% of women have cheated on their partner, birth control lowers risk of cuckoldry but it shows the risk has always been there.

As ridiculous as the sex at dawn view is, anyone who thinks humans are exclusively monogamous has not lived life. Our degree of sexual dimorphism is also far from typical for monogamous species.

No shit humans are not exclusively monogamous, but the point is that in basically every human population people are mostly monogamous + tend to pair-bond. I already explained this so not gonna go into it again...also both owl monkeys + gibbons (monogamous) are known to mate-guard

Let's go off a known historical event and extrapolate because I think what's going on here is searching for sperm competition adaptations in men is like the drunk looking for his keys under the lamppost Complete Y chromosome replacement by the Yamnaya on the Iberian peninsula

Right. High male reproductive variance *due to warfare, sex-biased migration, coercive polygyny, etc* not due to sperm competition and not due to female choice.

Precisely - but this says a lot about *men* and nothing about women This corresponds very well to self-reports of men - lots have trouble navigating the modern sexual market place where men compete on the basis of sexiness for women's attention and women grasp it intuitively

The women all survived and reproduced and may have been monogamous or promiscuous by nature The men weren't selected for sperm competition - they were selected for their ability to cooperate with other men and the payoff for that wasn't an extra-pair mating - it was much greater

In other words - the men were under intense selective pressure for the ability to wage cooperative war and the women weren't under any strong selective pressure other than the ability to get a man to invest in her and her offspring
