It's important to understand that it's liberal ideology that makes 'regime change' so ugly and violent. In an ideal coup, the plotters would be close to power, have the means to do it, and the coup would be carried out relatively swiftly. Liberalism undermines all of this.
The one thing they learned from the Cold War was "no Berlin Walls" for their side - if you wipe out West Germany or make it communist too then no one looks at liberalism side by side with an alternative and sees what a terrible deal liberalism is
