And note, I am in no way suggesting the reactionary return to traditional hereditary monarchy. Just that there were aspects of how its governance was organized that are superior to the mess that democracy has gotten us into.

I give the founders a great deal of credit for one system of opposition which has worked better than almost every other that they put in place: The electoral college and its function as a backstop of the republic against pure democratic forces.
