Has anyone seen a rad-trad defense of indulgences on this site? I haven't, which is *baffling* considering that was The Thing that kicked off the Reformation. Anything else, absolutely anything, they will defend, but when I bring up indulgences it's been 100% crickets.
Redirecting the charitable impulse towards the church gives you nicer cathedrals and artwork and socially supports the idea that the transcendent is real and of importance to high status men

In contrast, directing the charitable impulse towards the physical needs of the poor sends the opposite implicit message Plus giving resources to people who limit reproduction based on resources just gives you more resource limited people who remain poor - pointless
