Tom Boswell of the Washington Post started to mention what you Fenway Park fans were shouting at Jose Canseco later in the 1988 season: http://grantland.com/features/mlb-hall-fame-voting-steroid-era/ … Did any sabermetricians _ever_ analyze impact of PEDs on baseball statistics?https://twitter.com/kell37915340/status/1083575058197635074 …

I don't remember ever seeing any serious stabs at it. Of course the general mindset in saber circles is it happened and was regrettable, but that players like Bonds and Clemens were already greats before taking steroids, so it's not as a big of a deal as traditionalists think

As well as the argument that most/all of these things weren't against the rules at the time, so... what can you do? These arguments aren't necessarily wrong, but there's a clear rift on steroid attitudes between saber-types and more "traditional" fans

The bigger rift is between sportswriters and fans Sportswriters are consumed with envy for ballplayers By mouthing the right cliches a ballplayer concedes higher status to the journalist - he'll dance for them. If he doesn't they'll hurt him with whatever weapons they have

Fans shouting "steroids" at a player are just fans trying to get under the skin of opposing players
