I’m writing an article about how to survive the first 6 months of a PhD. Does anyone in the community have any advice they’d like to share?

You’re not seeing what you think you’re seeing...just FYI. EVOLUTION IS NUTS. That is the tip of the viper’s tail. It’s the lure of the Iranian spider-tailed viper!!!

My family therapist reacted with shock & shade when I mentioned that my kids and I are having to downsize from a two bedroom to a one bedroom apartment in Toronto because I can't afford skyrocketing rent. Instead of empathy or understanding, he suggested "I talk to my accountant"

1/4 When I make a prediction and get it wrong, I learn from my prediction error, updating my internal model. But does the error itself become a memory? That is, if I make that mistake again, do I learn differently because I've seen the error before?

Much talk about *stigma* as a barrier to effective overdose crisis response. But what does that mean? This piece provides an extensive overview of the kinds of stigma that impede public health interventions, along with actionable steps to address it

Canadians like to criticise Americans’ inability to deal with gun deaths – but our own unwillingness to do anything about pedestrian deaths seems based on a similar myopia, and more Torontonians are killed by cars than guns.

I wrote this paper arguing that the inferential statistics we report in psychology papers are so disconnected from the hypotheses they're meant to test that they may as well be made up. feedback is appreciated.

OK Boomer I'm ready for the backlash & anger to be focused on one goal: "Let's vote" That's how this mess came about, after all. My generation voted for Reagan, trickle-down BS, no new tax ideology that gutted education & the safety net & all the rest. I decided to review.1/

A reporter asked me how I got off the streets when I was a homeless kid. I said, "I got a job at McDonalds." He blurted, "that's embarrassing." No, it is not. Hard work is never embarrassing. What is embarrassing is how nowadays that wouldn't pay the rent.

To all the students applying for graduate schools this year and worried they can’t afford the application fee, ask for the waiver! They are often granted without question.

Are there any examples of people in your life who pleasantly surprised you in their allyship? Please share. This week is rank with fake allyship neoliberalism and I need some optimism.

My account is anonymous because I was scared that this could happen to me. I thought my fears were irrational - until now. Before you hit that @ sign, remember that real people with real feelings, lives, families (etc) run these accounts. @ responsibly & with respect , always

This is the catch with industry driving an otherwise foundational research field. It is great that their contributions in AI are largely open for all; but we must remember that their research will be skewed towards their market advantages.
