So here's another Chinese spaceflight update 1st announced in my city, this time at @HKUniversity by ex-LM-3 development program manager & long time "Chinese rocketry public expert" Long Lehao on the upcoming Chinese (S)HLVs:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcXla8NK82g …

To re-cap previous reports, this "CZ-5DY" uses 3 cores w/ each using 7 x YF-100K (improved version of existing RP-1 engines on CZ-5 to 8), 2nd stage using 2 x YF-100M (vacuum fired version of the -100K) & optional 3rd stage using 3 x YF-75D (LH2 engine used on CZ-5 2nd stage).

Payload is 70t to LEO & 27t to LTO, the later exactly the minimum capability of SLS Block 1. As seen on the right, a core only 2 stage version w/ single 2nd stage engine will be used for LEO flights (~20 t to LEO) of the Chinese Next Generation Crew S/C. Both may appear by 2025.

Now the more striking news is that plans of the long talked-about CZ-9 has changed completely again! Due to the emergence of CZ-5DY & what looks like the Chinese taking note of what 2 US billionaires are doing, they have given up the old CZ-9 plans & engines for a clean sheet.pic.twitter.com/VRPobfKQ1a

The new CZ-9 uses 16 YF-135 engines, apparently a single chamber 3.6 MN thrust stage combustion RP-1 engine. Previous plans was for an under development 4.8 MN thrust dual-chamber engine (apparently known as the "YF-130"). The stage is 10.6 m in diameter.

The 2nd (10.6 m dia.) & (optional) 3rd stages (7.5 m dia.) uses 4 & 1 120 t thrust LH2 engine, probably an evolved YF-77 used on the LM-5 core w/ open cycle. Payload given is 150 t to LEO & 53 t to LTO, in SH/SS or SLS Block 2 class.

Given new engines used & 3 in-development engine designs probably going to be halted ("YF-130", the 2.2 MN open cycle LH2 engine apparently named "YF-90" & 250 kN closed cycle LH2 "YF-79"), it's unlikely to appear before well into the 2030s.

Re-usability isn't mentioned, but discussions in Chinese forums seems to think there's plenty of capability to include it. Whether this new plan can be called "aggressive" (source
@SenBillNelson) is debatable, but I definitely think it's "steady" & much more doable.Diesen Thread anzeigen
