So regarding current status of Mars surface S/C telecom relaying, I checked out @mrn_status and noticed that ESA's Mars Express has stopped relaying for NASA S/C on surface, leaving 2001 Mars Odyssey/MRO/@MAVEN2Mars/@ESA_TGO to the job.
Is this permanent & when did this happen?
I have partially answered my own question with this: https://mars.nasa.gov/news/8861/the-mars-relay-network-connects-us-to-nasas-martian-explorers/ … "Even ESA’s Mars Express orbiter will be available for emergency communications should the need arise." So it's now in back-up role, no wonder it can be spared to help with relaying for the Chinese.
