I figured that I should add "functional" into the sentence... (actually there was one theory that the problem was w/ the relaying orbiter - which went into the wrong orbit at MOI - and not the lander!)

That actually makes a lot of sense,it leaked fuel and went into a 12.5 day orbit rather than a 25 hour one. It would have spent significantly less time near perigee. And because the lander used it as a relay, it went out of range at that point. 12.5 days later,
