On closer thoughts the drilled sub-surface samples and scooped surface samples might have different container compartments, which would be more than enough to made up the difference since the drilled ones should be ~1/4 of the total sample mass.

potentially good news. they may have used old sample density to estimate the weigh based on the volume of container. since the weigh is less than expected, it means the soil is not as dense as old samples, the new sample is different and there is new information to be gained.
