Is this New Long March akin to a stretched three core LM5?

Not really. The LM-5 uses an LH2 core with 4 smaller kerolox boosters, while the 921 rocket has 3 identical kerolox cores.

They could retire Long March 5 if this rocket comes online and proves its reliability. A 2-stage rocket using single core of 921 could have an even greater throw capacity than LM5, and would be large enough to eventually adopt reusability.

Modularity is definitely the key to reduce cost. I wonder would the push-back of Long March 9 preclude any mission that requires a ~10m fairing.

How fast can they develop this new rocket..? Or rather, do they have any time estimate on when this rocket will be available..? Considering that they will be using existing engines and have a similar body diam. to LM-5...
