Without any evidence except diversity of products, I fear Chinese commercial launch is the greatest long-term threat to US launch entrepreneurs. China may succeed in creating an industry approaching inventiveness of US in a totalitarian dictatorship. Old USSR would be jealous.

Dictatorship does not foster entrepreneurship.

I would have agreed with you in the past - that dictatorships are incompatible with truly inventive economies - but from appearances, it looks like China may have found a way around this rule. If so, I think that is extraordinarily bad news for the world.

I suspect that there's something strange with the sudden growth of "Chinese NewSpace" lately, particularly with the strangely high proportion of smallsat LSP start-ups reaching the pad than in other places. Bubble? Military-Industrial Complex? I have no idea what's going on.

It’s been going on for a while. The rocket developers, satellite developers and operators are very active in the past two years in fund raising from VCs. Now the more robust ones have passed the Round A stage and are beginning to deliver more tangible outcomes.

That doesn't explain why the proportion of such LSP start-ups reaching the pad and beyond seems to be much higher in China than in the US or Europe or other countries.

They tend to do everything rather quickly... Bubbles indeed. I believe the ultimate survivors will be few.
