I'm not sure if the video confirms that (I swear I can see boosters separate), but if true the dynamics change so much during separation that I won't be surprised if that went wrong. The boosters still have the retro motors. They are mounted just above the fins on the boosters, and in a vertical orientarion rather then horizontal. The boosters and core separate together ala GSLV-Mk2.
It seems that the struts, binding the boosters to the core stage, have also changed between the pictures
What intrigues me is that if they'd wanted to test such an untested procedure, why would have they put a satellite on the rocket instead of a dummy payload? Is it possible that XJY-6 has also been a dummy payload rather than a real satellite?
