Today's the 50th anniversary of the day that - after 4 unsuccessful tries - Japan sent a satellite into orbit (the Ohsumi). With the Lambda-4S rocket still holding the smallest successful SLV record, the way it became the 4th country to sent something to orbit is pretty special.pic.twitter.com/XItO0uCLD3

It also happens that the Japanese still holds as the only ones that sent things into orbit with just spin/gravity-gradient stabilization (a feat replicated by a modified SS-520 sounding rocket in 2018) & the only ones in the 20th Century that went the fully civilian way!
