It did seem strange at the time that the first stage went out but nothing replaced it, then they cut away to the animation
IIRC the Vega 2nd stage motor is usually too faint to be seen from ground, so this is actually probably normal.

Maybe but at night I would think you would see something after seperation of the stages but there is nothing.
