don’t think of yourself as a good person, because that tends to have the opposite of your intended effect: it lulls you into a false sense of security in which you put too little thought into your actions. instead, frame it like this: “i TRY to be a good person.”

because if you’re convinced that you have an inherent goodness, then why bother interrogating your own motivations? why even entertain the possibility that you might have hurt others in the past, or might still be hurting people now?
