I’m fascinated to see these numbers track with the emergence of a mainstreamed, right-wing alternate realityhttps://twitter.com/DSAArchaeology/status/1052564362408484864 …

Andersen is gracious here but I struggle to imagine any effort that profession could have made to stem this tide. It’s bigger than any one of us, and bigger than any one profession Especially as ancient aliens is, at root, a white supremacist notionhttps://twitter.com/DSAArchaeology/status/1052680944342192128 …

To respond to some of the comments, I do not share this data to make fun of Ancient Alien believers. The believers are not stupid, they have been let down by archaeologists. Numbers this high suggest to me that myself & my fellow archaeologists have failed at public outreach.

(To wit: it’s impossible to imagine non-Europeans with achievements in science and technology, thus any such achievements must come at the grace of ancient alien visitors )

Europeans raised some rocks into a circle at Stonehenge, and 500 years later the Egyptians built the fucking pyramids. Seems pretty clear to me which civilization was the most advanced.
