        Rails comes to mind. Basecamp wasn’t in the business of creating web frameworks, but they saw value in open sourcing their in-house solution.

        Mongo. IIRC it was developed as an internal database for a different product 10gen had in mind Segment's "analytics splitter" was ~100 lines of JS, what they ended up building their business around
