could have been a tired rehashing of the 4 freedoms. Instead, it took the bold step to offer (and others) a platform to kickstart a courageous and thoughtful conversation about the importance of ethics in FOSS and beyond. 🙏👏

Interesting thought from the audience: the victims of software that discussed are often not the users of the software. We've focused too much on the software users and not the impact of the use

We have a tendency as developers to think we can come up with things from first principles. We can learn from other industries' experience in handling ethical concerns; we don't have to start from scratch -

We must ask ourselves whether it is more important to solve the problem of software freedom, or of human freedom?

The of are not enough. eloquently pointing out that we cannot just ask for ethics in our role as engineers, we must demand ethics and accountability. This is a call-out. Will we pay attention? We must!

  11. I feel very good about the talk that I gave today at CopyleftConf, and the discussion afterward. I’m grateful to have been invited to speak on the critical topic of ethics in OSS, and I’m looking forward to continuing the conversation in the future.

It is our response to these social and ethical issues that will define the future we build together. How will you and I respond?

The point is to be uncomfortable. We cannot avoid our social responsibilities as engineers of our shared digital world. We cannot ignore ethical consequences of what we build together. calling truth to our cumulative actions as engineers in society.

How would you feel if you had worked at IBM at the onset of WW2 and your work was used for the holocaust? How would you feel if the punch cards used by the Nazis were under the GPL? on our responsibilities as technologists

  21. Brussels is lovely so far, even though I’ve only made one expedition so far. We found a great little 24-hour cafe with alcohol on the menu and a covered smoking section, so I was in heaven. Also got to spend some time having a great conversation with my friend !
