Unlike discussions over Chequers proposals or Mansion House speech the two sides are broadly on the same page. The aim for this year is to secure a pretty standard FTA combined with a few other agreements. At least the two sides are not talking past each other 2/

For a moment I thought the Russian economy had slumped by 50%. Turns it grew at half its previous rate. Not really a tumble at all, perhaps a stumble unless it continues

I'm tired. No doubt you’re tired of seeing my tweets. So for now I just note: nothing in here on intellectual property CETA has sections on copyrights, trademarks, geographical indications, designs, patents, data protection, plant varieties, enforcement

Thread with a fascinating series of charts showing the distribution of tariffs by country, an indication of the degree of tariff protectionism

This 👇🏽 part of the thread needs highlighting. It is factually incorrect. Neither the UK’s “schedule” of WTO commitments on goods, nor the one on services, is under the UK’s control during the transition. For that period, the EU’s schedules apply

“We have made our choice: we want a comprehensive free trade agreement, similar to Canada’s.” Again, CETA = 1598 pages; 30 chapters, each on a major subject of its own. Nothing wrong with the aim. What’s wrong is pretending it can be done in a year 5/5

    2. “… it is high time I think we all agree that [the US] cut their punitive tariffs on Scotch whisky” Clue: “punitive”. These are WTO-authorised tariffs because the UK violated WTO rules on subsidies (for Airbus). Will the UK comply with the ruling? 3/n

    1. “And today in Geneva as our ambassador Julian Braithwaite moves seats in the WTO and takes back control of our tariff schedules …” — Wrong. During the the transition the UK stays in the EU customs union. It’s still the EU28 tariff schedule 2/n

Lots for people to comment about in Johnson’s speech. I’ll stick to 3 points on trade and the WTO. I’ll ignore the comment on the Uruguay Round, the simplistic blame game on the Doha Round (nothing on India?) and calling WTO terms “like Australia” 1/n

OK, so on doesn’t feel the need to explain what a “Canada-style” deal covers, except to say it doesn’t contain much on services. There are THIRTY chapters:

The EU Commission has released the Negotiating Mandate it wants from EUCO for talks with the United Kingdom. I am going to live-tweet things as they jump out at me. First time live tweeting, so let me know if this is an infuriating way to communicate.

I am deeply unhappy with the communication politics of the government. IF checks are in violation of the withdrawal agreement and the PD, the government is, of course, preparing to break the withdrawal agreement and the PD, as it has just announced it will run a full border.
