There are four things I look for in the interviews I do. First, the candidate actually *asks* about what we do to make remote work better and promote camaraderie on the team. If it's top of mind for a candidate, I know they'll join the team and help us improve.

Second, I ask questions that specifically get to the heart of how a candidate prioritizes work. I’m looking for methodical thinking and an ability to simplify into a framework or rubric. Clearly, this isn’t unique to remote work, but poor performance here is exacerbated remote.

Third, great written communication is essential. I’ve instituted a hard core “Write It Down” culture. Everything is in docs in shared locations where the whole company can see our ideas and plans. Most of our meetings are done in docs before we even get together via Zoom.

(Side note: a written word culture helps us be more inclusive among not just folks who are shy, but as we grow globally, people in non-English speaking locales can contribute at a high level. F2F meetings tend to reward the loudest voice.)

Finally, I look for something that makes the candidate exceptional in their remote region: deep network with local tech communities (we’re DevRel, after all), for example. This gives the remote worker something big to bring to the team.

I’ll also add that I’ve been a remote leader on Jeff’s team for two years now. There are good and bad. Bad: I’ve gained weight. You underestimate the amount of MOVING you do in a day going to and fro. At home, I go from meeting to meeting by pushing a button.

Good: I have a lot of flexibility in my life. But at first I had to get over thinking that I was lazy. When you’re in an office, there’s water cooler talk and lounging around. At home, you’re on your couch and you think you’re not pulling your own weight.

Very very good: these are my office mates. Office politics sucks because they're always conspiring to steal my bacon, but the mid-afternoon cuddles more than makes up for it.pic.twitter.com/OdxmYw3a8r

Thoughts? Any other things we should look for in remote workers?
