Dear Americans, Whatever you always believed the German citizens should have done to stop the Hitler regime, now is the time for you to do just that, for the sake of your country and the world. Thank you, from Germany

This isn't an apology; it's a statement of regret. If it WERE an apology, which, again, it is not, it would be a blame-the-victim apology. (Hillary MADE ME act the way I did!) Also, a good apology would name the offense: "I'm sorry I booed Sec Clinton at a Bernie rally." Easy!

In my house, we just determined that it is not crying until a tear escapes your eyes and runs down your face. Before that, it’s just “tearing up.”

Once again, reminder to headline writers: Regret ≠ Apology. Regret is about how the *speaker* feels; the *speaker* feels hurt. "Sorry" is about how *OTHER PEOPLE* feel; it focuses on the impact of one's actions on others.

Turns out, Oliver Sacks loved to write notes on the pages of books he was reading--thoughts, ideas, arguments with the author, diagrams. Well over 500 of these....

Another clue, as I posted two years ago: Always look to see who is in a hurry. As Tacitus wrote, "Truth is confirmed by inspection and delay; falsehood by haste and uncertainty."

When someone says, “I don’t want to hear it” or “I don’t want to hear you say... “ are they objecting to the (truth of the) content, the subject or to the speaker’s right to speak (about it)?

Intentions matter less than impacts. You did hurt people. Start with the apology rather than the excuse, show you understand WHY you caused pain, explain how it won’t happen again.
