1: "The term 'trap' is a slur that reflects a mind set that gets trans women murdered." I'm acutely aware, and spreading awareness about this is one of the primary goals of the proposed video.
2: "Calling the video 'Are Traps Gay' is a terrible way to frame this topic because it begins with the transphobic framework" That's exactly the point. Here's how my persuasive style works: you begin by emulating the bigot/normie/shitlord style—
You demonstrate fluency with their jokes, their memes, their whole way of thinking. Then you begin to unravel the worldview that you've, at first, pretended to share. Only once that's accomplished do you start building up a new way of looking at things.
The point of the initial fake-out is that it's warm and inviting. If the video is framed as "Why You're Transphobic"—no one likes that, no one listens to that. They're dead against you from the start.
People have this expectation about what an "SJW" is like: that you're angry, always outraged, humorless, tiresome, earnest to a fault. The point of ContraPoints is to have SJW-type talking points presented by a host who's nothing like that.
If I come right out of the gate with guns blazing, shouting "YOUR SHITTY MEME GETS TRANS WOMEN KILLED"—no one listens. I'm just a hysterical wacko in the eyes of everyone who isn't already woke about this.
3: "Would you do a video with the n-word in the title?" No, I wouldn't. I'm not black.
4: "If trans women see the phrase 'Are Traps Gay?' without a warning, that could be triggering/upsetting to a lot of them." I'm not someone who disparages safe spaces. I think it's incredibly important to have spaces like that. But my channel is not designed to be a safe space.
So, just my thoughts, but doesn't that mostly appeal to bigots who will ignore any message for change in the content? Seems a title like "Trans-ness isn't a Trap" (or something actually good) would manage to communicate the same message without the casual use of the slur. Thank
Like, lots of people just read titles. They see a trans person use a trans slur, they figure that means it's okay for them to use. Maybe you just have more trust in the innate goodness of our species than I do.
Has anyone brought up the idea that someone who's typing that title into youtube will come across your video amongst a bunch of shitposters and maybe learn something?
We know from behavioural psychology that this may have a considerable backfire effect, called the Familiarity Backfire Effect (via https://skepticalscience.com/docs/Debunking_Handbook.pdf …, page 2). I'm not saying don't do it, but it may be worth it to consider other approaches to avoid this problem.
